As part of the program, @hanshatzel.bsky.social, @evelyngius.bsky.social & @haimostiemer.bsky.social presented our current work on the PLANS project โ€” including analyses based on our full dataset on modeling Plot Units. Our @narrativesimtask.bsky.social also sparked lively discussion! (3/4)

We especially appreciated the evening talks:
โžก๏ธ Jan Rybicki (Jagiellonian University) asked whether #ChatGPT could imitate Hemingway,
โžก๏ธ Katherine Bode (Australian National University) explored the materiality of #computing,
โžก๏ธ Damien Garreau (University of Wรผrzburg) introduced #explainableAI. (2/4)

In the evenings we strolled around the old town of Fulda and had dinner together. And the last point of order always had to be a round of Bananagrams! From now on a must for all future team retreats! (4/4)

Everyday started with a quick check-in to warm up (see an example below), followed by either project discussions or planning sessions. Twice a year we review the projects and tasks of the last six months and make a preliminary plan for the next six. (2/4)

โžก๏ธ With Kleistโ€™s "The Earthquake in Chile", ChiA shows how Josephe & Jeronimo shift from active figures to passive objects. A network graph makes such dynamics visible and opens new views on narrative structure, power, and complexity. (4/5)

โžก๏ธ In this way, ChiA takes up Franco Morettiโ€™s idea that plots can be quantified through character constellations. And it even goes further: Instead of focusing only on presence or relations, it adds a new dimension โ€“ the varying degrees of agency that characters display. (3/5)

โžก๏ธ ChiA (Character in Action) models character networks based on agency and goes beyond frequency counts: It traces agency โ€“ the intentional action of characters and the assumption of low-level or passive roles. This makes shifts in character's participation in events visible across the text. (2/5)
