its certiantly not impossible, but it would be very difficult to get done without major changes

and county politics play a huge part in this. caltrain is ran by a jpa, no county involvement. county level politics can be incredibly territorial and it would be unlikely for them to fund things that are seen to benefit other counties

caltrain was the easy electrification, almost no freight, cahsr needed the tracks to be electrified anyways, and it still took huge federal grants that chao tried to cancel, and over 20 years from when it was seriously proposed. and now federal transit grants are going away, at least until fy30

plus if i'm octa why would i do something that requires a lot of my own money when trains have to be diesel to go on bnsf trackage anyways? cahsr wont cover it bc it's only going to anaheim, and maybe not even a blended system

they bought the tracks for cheap in the 80s/90s so metrolink could exist. all the tracks in la county + laupt were bought for under 400 million in today's dollars. and they wouldnt just allow it, metrolink proposed score so that there for be bi-directional 2tph service across most of the system for

for metrolink to electrify, the counties need to fund those projects, and the expanded service. most counties dont see metrolink as a priority and would rather fund services within their own areas

the only bits of metrolink ownership are within la county (both under metro), everything elsewhere is county-owned, including nctd in sd who doesnt fund or operate metrolink

gillig didnt produce transit buses until 1978, and i think the first high floor came into service in 1982

forrest gump sucks they use gillig high floors for scenes in the 60s

also the tracks that metrolink runs on can legally see up to 100 trains a day and bnsf will happily fill up as much of that as they can, they will run 50+ trains a day pretty regularly, and its their only way to the port of la/lb, so there's no price that would get them to sell

there will be electrification on metrolink in around a decade for the blended system, but metrolink is unlikely to use it

metrolink could fully electrify the sb line rn, but i get why they would hesitate to only electrify one line, which is why they should electrify three at once. a lot of the work will be done for the blended system anyways

a bigger issue is that most of what metrolink owns is owned by the counties, and they would also have to choose to pay to electrify, and the biggest bottlenecks/major corridors in the system are freight owned

metrolink does own a lot of what was sp within la county, but up would likely throw a huge fit over electrifying it since they have rights to use it still

caltrain has a lot less freight on the peninsula than metrolink does, bnsf can legally operate over 50 trains a day (and they do so with double stacks), and owns the tracks while the jpa owns the tracks and only sees one local a day

you'll have a few years, metro only has 64 of the of the crrcs on order and hasnt yet placed a new order for the rest of the fleet replacement
