I found out that the Big Y grocery store chain actually gives FREE food items to registered customers on a points basis.
Grab that FREE food and bring it to your local pantry.
It would literally cost you nothing to help out.

this method requires a lot of research, organization, and planning to know the policies at each place and to get the right combo of coupons to products but it's pretty useful

i had a customer at a previous job that was an extreme couponer & she would load up on a ton of stuff for free/cheap and donate it. a lot of places have changed their coupon policies, but it might still be worth looking into to stock up your own pantry and/or help out. got us thru the recession lol
