I'm all in favor of celebrating (eventually) but not like this. Local organizing efforts were grassroots and localized and tailored to specific communities, and biz leaders don't get to just swoop in and slap their sponsorship logos on the hard work *they didn't do*
We'll plan our own parties

An embroidered image of a flegg with the words Secret Samol around it. A flegg is an egg creature with a large nose/beak.
And on the back there is a hidden flegg. Everyone please listen to Friends at the Table because I will not be explaining this.

A close up image of an embroidered falling star in yellow, pink, and blue. There are trees in each side and flowers below.
There were so many French knots involved in this and hours of stitching! After laying down the base layers of appliqué that sketched out the landscape, I started with the falling star, which is my favorite part.

An embroidered and quilted panel showing a shooting star falling onto a changing landscape. Each corner has a smaller appliqué in yellow, a hand holding a star, a butterfly wing, and orchid, and a snail shell. Everything is on a bright pink background with an embroidered blue star border.
This is my third year of #secretsamol, my first year not getting a prompt for Lyke, and my most ambitious project so far. Thanks to @glenatron.bsky.social for the Perpetua prompt ‘where the star fell,’ which allowed me to spend a lot of time looking at images of both stars and swamps.

@tapetraveler.bsky.social This is so amazing. When I opened my email, I was already excited to see the first little guy, and then they kept coming! And the animations! Thank you so much.

This is something that most people will miss, because they're not in the profession and haven't ever really thought about historical knowledge is produced. But it's an incredibly important point.

“People are inherently terrible” no!!! Have you ever seen a child wait for their friend while they tie their shoelaces? Have you ever known someone who would bring hurt squirrels and rabbits and mice to the nearest vet just so it doesn’t suffer? Have you seen someone grieve? Have you ever read something that hit your heart like a freight train? Have you looked at the stars and felt an unexplainable joy? Have you ever baked bread? Have you shared a meal with a friend? Have you not seen it? All the love? All the good? I know it’s hard to see sometimes, I know there’s pain everywhere. But look, there’s a child helping another up after a hard fall. Look, there’s someone giving their umbrella to a stranger. Look, there’s someone admiring the spring flowers. Look, there’s good, there’s good, there’s good. Look!!!!

A graphic titled "2025 Economic Blackout Schedule" outlines planned consumer blackouts. The word "BLACKOUT" is displayed in bold black letters with a crossed-out shopping cart icon inside the letter "O." A calendar and clock emoji appear in the top right corner. The schedule lists:
Total Blackout (Feb. 28): No purchases at all, with a recommendation to buy essentials in advance and shop local if necessary.
Amazon Blackout (March 7-14): No purchases from Amazon.
Nestlé Blackout (March 21-28): No purchases of Nestlé products, including Gerber, Perrier, Chefmate, Purina, and Friskies.
Walmart Blackout (April 7-14): No purchases from Walmart or Walmart.com. A sad face emoji is next to Walmart's name.
Total Blackout 2 (April 18): Another full no-purchase day with similar recommendations.
At the bottom, three sections encourage people to:
Spread the word – by sharing the information.
Prepare – by purchasing necessities before the blackout days.
Spend $0 – by avoiding purchases on blackout days and shopping local if necessary.
This will not be the first economic blackout or the last. But it's a place for new people to start, and for others to continue their boycott.
Eat. The. Rich.

A landscape photo of the shore of Lake Superior. There is a rocky beach in the lower right and a small rocky island in the center. The sky clear and bright blue. The water is a dark slate blue that shows ripples from the wind.
A photo of a Lake Superior beach with Split Rock Lighthouse on a cliff in the distance. A beach covered in large rocks fills the foreground. The sky is clear and shows the beginning of sunset. The moon is visible in the sky, bright and nearly full.
If you see this, quote post with a photo of a beach from your gallery.
The beaches of Lake Superior may be too rocky for lounging, but they are beautiful. These were taken at the Split Rock Lighthouse State Park this past November.

A portrait of Lyke and Aterika’Kaal, characters from the podcast Friends at the Table, embroidered on a white handkerchief with a rose lace border. Lyke lovingly cradled a beaded felt rose bloom to his embroidered face as blood made of red beads drips from various points where its vines, made of braided embroidery thread, touch his neck and hand. One of the lace roses on the upper corner has been made to look like Aterika’Kaal’s spider form. It has a felt rose head and legs made out of the same braids as the vines. Rose vines are embroidered across the back, with the lines fading into a blood red near the bottom.
A close up view of Lyke’s face that shows the embroidered and beaded details.
A close up view of Aterika’Kaal’s face that shows the various materials used to create it, including felt, beads, braided embroidery thread, and the floral lace that forms its body.
A close-up image of the rose border along the base of Lyke’s bust-style portrait. The roses are three dimensional and are made of red felt with green embroidered leaves.
Second year of #secretsamol, second time making something about Lye Lychen. I honestly wouldn’t be mad if I got a Lyke prompt for the next several years.

Friends, I need you to use alt text on every picture. Plus the full name and nothing with an asterisk.
1. For accessibility
2. So muted words work. That's helping people who are caring for themselves.
3. If you're gonna take a stand about how we should care for people, this is part of caring.

What I love in these complex glass-making instructions from the Library of Ashurbanipal is a reference to older texts.
“Copy of an ancient tablet”, reads a line from this, to us, ancient tablet.
A reminder that the scholars writing these instructions worked to preserve older knowledge and history

If you have been meaning to help, the time is now. Multiple camps with fires and evictions at this moment. We'll be handing out hand warmers and coffee and supplies, bring warm clothes (especially gloves) if you want, or go let people just sit in your car to warm up until there's somewhere to go ❤️

A block print titled From the Inventory of Lye Lychen, Collected from across the Heartland. The print depicts and labels a variety of items that were part of Lyke’s story in Sangfielle, a season of Friends at the Table. The print is laid on a square of blue fabric and has a dried rose set on one corner.

I had an interaction with a stranger today who wanted to tell me how much they thought history was important, that it's something we should face head-on.
When I suggested that she should advocate for empowered/employed educators, it was clear she'd never thought about educators as part of history.
