A semipalmated sandpiper standing in still water. The bird is looking for food but appears to be contemplating its reflection. That water reflects a pale blue sky and is almost completely calm except for a few small ripples caused by the bird walking.
My favorite shot from May came from an evening spent with shorebirds. This Semipalmated Sandpiper photo was my favorite of the month and was published in the North Dakota Game & Fish Department's 2026 wildlife calendar.

These aren't regulars at BHB. Pied oystercatchers are resident there and almost always seen. I did notice that the pied oystercatchers chased this one away 😄
A curlew sandpiper (listed as critically endangered in Australia) and a red-necked stint.
