The neighbor fell off the tractor seat and was fatally run over. Weeks later the neighbor's family returned the killer bush-hog to my uncle, I think they had even cleaned it up first.

My room-mate in college was a dairy farm boy from Manitowac, when I met his father he reached out with half a hand to shake mine (he'd been careless with a radial-arm saw). But there's an even worse story... My late uncle lent a "bush-hog to a neighbor, a tractor-towed weed-eater with chains...

I sat next to a guy on a long flight who has a job that is completely devoted to rolling out AI in a large business, I told him that outside very specific machine learning applications I was skeptical that general AI would be useful soon… he ruefully agreed, said it made things up too often.

Still would rather not be a host! But with my pants tucked into
my socks and long sleeves I did OK.

We spent a week in Malaysian Borneo in 2023, the one time I walked in the woods on a trail I had to pick off a couple dozen leeches when I got back to the cabin, luckily none had gotten a real hold on me! I don’t know how the locals put up with it!

I understand that the British degree is really focussed on the major, in this young person’s case they were fine with that, they had been volunteering in their field and were very clear on what they wanted to do… and so far they have been doing well!

A friend has been going to Argentina to lead seminars (in a science field), he loves visiting there and has a lot of fun working with the students!

We have British friends in California, their daughter went back to the UK for her bachelor’s degree in biology… much cheaper and done in 3 years. I don’t know what the deal is now though, since the UK has been gutting whole departments…

Tidal is good for pop, my musician son told me they pay better rates to the artists, though still a pittance

I did not expect that to happen… I know a lot of people from Aleppo, have not chatted with any of them recently so don’t know how they feel about things… given that they are Armenian I expect it is β€œcomplicated”…

Sort of shows that talent in one area does not mean someone is wise or empathetic or any number of other qualities

Crick was so upset about the way Watson portrayed Franklin (and Wilkins too, I think) that he tried to get the publication stopped! I can see why the book was a success, Watson could spin a good story, but he regularly made my skin crawl reading it!

I only read The Double Helix last year, it was atrocious how he mocked her in the main text, and then he had the gall to try to walk it back in an afterword. I followed it up with reading a good biography of Franklin. My impression is that Watson and Crick did contribute to figuring it out, but…

A friend of mine moved to the Bay Area decades ago, last I talked to him he is still flaunting his Baton Rouge accent. My Virginia accent comes and goes, especially when I visit, but my sister in Richmond says "Accent? What accent?" as sweet as can be... One affectation is I use "y'all" regularly...

This is great! How is this actually working? Is Oregon providing the money for now on the expectation that funds will get released soon? Or did SNAP money finally get sent out from the Feds?

I’ve only had the prep pills, the results were the same but I didn’t have to choke down a couple of bottles of slime… just a handful of pills and a LOT of water!

I have my doubts about steps 5 and 6, unless the tunic has a lot of width at the bottom I don't see how it would be wide enough to wrap around the front and get tied off... but still a fun panel!
