If you have ICE agents only deporting known criminals you can theoretically maintain some sense of justice, but if ICE agents are motivated by a quota, if deporting a certain number of people each day becomes the job description, thats when grandmas and kids get kidnapped.

It's the deportation quota that likely leads to the most injustices. People reduced to numbers. This is what Zygmunt Bauman was getting at when he explained how it was the accountants that sent people to concentration camps.

That's the thing about us humans, we think our life is sustained by being the "fittest" or pulling on bootstraps, but we also live by the grace of those around us and those who came before us.

Yes I've worked hard, but my means of survival has also been a gift. A mentor teaching me how dream big, a friend recommending me to a job, a boss trusting me with a big project, a hundred friends and strangers donating to help us rebuild after the fires burned down our home. It's all been gifts.
