I am 60% done with my first draft (according to my outline) and I am fighting burnout. I'm closer than ever to writing the scenes that inspired this whole book, but the closer I get, the harder it becomes somehow, haha.

1,800 words written this evening. I call that a success! My daily average is a bit under 1k, so this was great for me! What's your usual daily output?

60k words into the first draft, nearly at the halfway mark! Life has slowed my weekly output down, but I still find the time most days to get some words onto paper. Discipline is the key, I'm finding. I expect the first draft to by done by early spring. Absolutely thrilled!

You ever have a scene so important to your current work that it was the primary motivation for starting the story to begin with? I'm only two or three chapters away from mine, and the anticipation is killing me!

50k words into the novel after less than two months. Feeling pretty good about it all! Can't wait to get to the second draft so I can start focusing on making it actually good!

Totally feel that. Currently 28k words into it, and I think the book is gonna end up around 175k is by the end of the first draft. I'm fairly certain my second draft is going to be around 130k words. Say what you need to say first, then find the best way to say it in the least amount of words later.

A hot shower to get away from everything and still my mind. And then noise canceling headphones and some music to transport me to where I need to go. And then just start putting some words on the page.

That sounds like nonsense to me! I have to write a series because the story I want to tell simply can't fit in a single volume. Also, what's wrong with just wanting to keep giving people characters and settings that they love?

Like what do you mean I have to write it? I literally spend all day thinking about it and you're telling me then I have to put it on paper?

I think it's great. What's really needed during the process is support from people who aren't trying to change your story or characters, people who get what you're going through. It is, unfortunately, quite difficult to find a good group.

I wonder why writing flashbacks in the present tense works so well when the rest of the novel is written in past tense. Maybe it feels more like you're reliving it, like you're there, in the memory? The way we actively recall a memory. Maybe it only works because of the juxtaposition?

I've decided that I want to try and build or find a positive community of writers in which we help one another complete our projects and give each other support when we start to feel that burnout. Here's to hoping!
