Plot twists don't have to shock.
They just have to resonate.

This year, my partner and I bought our first property. It took us some time to decide how to decorate our reading nook, but now that it’s complete, the house finally feels like a home β˜•πŸ‚πŸ“• #5amwritersclub #writingcommunity

My favourite animal is a highland cow, so seeing them in the wild is a must for me! I'd like to do a road trip at some point, for sure πŸš—

We visited Edinburgh last December and were blown away by how incredible it was β›² What started as a simple, budget-friendly getaway has become one of our favourite destinations. We’re already hoping to return later this year!

The Truth Behind the Rosemary Cross Case | Amber Bristow In a house steeped in tragic history, the whispers of young spirits and the etchings on ancient walls unveil a tale of suffering, resilience, and a quest for freedom.

I received some lovely messages after sharing my short story "The Mystery of Rosemary Cross", so I’m excited to post the next piece in the two-part series: "The Truth Behind the Rosemary Cross Case" πŸ’Ό www.amberbristow.com/the-truth-be... #5amwritersclub #writingcommunity

What writing has taught me this week:

1. If a sentence makes me feel clever, it probably needs to be cut.
2. Pacing improves more from what I remove than what I add.
3. The first draft is for me - the edit is for the reader.

Thank you, Philip. It's my favourite pastime, so I try not to drain the joy from it with rigid planning. I keep a loose deadline, but give myself room for breaks and bursts of creativity. It’s really helped me maintain my love for writing πŸ€—

Same here. Usually just rereading the last chapter is enough to get me back into the headspace, but if it’s been a while I’ll go back a few chapters to fully immerse myself - I always end up making more edits along the way πŸ™ˆ

That’s a refreshing perspective. I tend to go back and forth between perfecting as I go and racing through. I think it reflects how excited I get about certain scenes - sometimes they just pour out - but it definitely makes editing a bit of a mess!

20+ novels is very impressive! Experience and preplanning count for a lot. And I agree, rushing a story can definitely take the joy out of it, not to mention the quality.

Do you find your more recent work has taken a similar amount of time, or has your process changed with experience?

03.09.2025 16:17 β€” πŸ‘ 0    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 0    πŸ“Œ 0

Sounds like we’re in the same boat! People always say to just write it all out and edit later, but I actually enjoy editing as I go - it’s part of the process for me.

I was the exact same... I’ve got two drafts, but one’s my main focus. I started it after COVID, though it sat untouched for a while. This year I’ve really committed, and I’m aiming to finish it in the next two months and pass it to literary agents 🫰🏼

Wow, six months is incredible! What did you change in your process to cut the time down so much?

03.09.2025 16:02 β€” πŸ‘ 1    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

Thank you Jennifer! With juggling writing with a job and personal life, a year is very impressive! Mine is taking a while longer... honestly it sat untouched for a while 🫣

That sounds about right! I think the mental breakdown is just part of the character development… for the writer 🫣
