Thought this might be helpful to hashtag#HigherEd writers and editors: Things to ask yourself before you write/publish an op-ed about disabled students in hashtag#HigherEd. β 1. Am I disabled? Do I have any lived experience as a disabled person? 2. Have I earned a degree in hashtag#disability studies? Do I have any other expertise on this topic? For example, have I read the work of seminal disability scholars like Jay Dolmage and Leah Lakshmi Piepzna-Samarasinha? 3. What is my goal in writing this? Am I trying to fix or save disabled people? Might my energy be used more effectively by removing the barriers that stand in the way of disabled folks speaking on their own behalf, perhaps by publicly asking our hashtag#HigherEd trade publications to diversify their writing and editing pool to include more disabled folks? 4. Am I about to write an ableist op-ed? If the piece argues, either directly or indirectly, that disabled people are 1) weak and 2) threatening, then the piece is ableist. Stop here. Do not write. Do not publish. Hope this helps! π
