A familiar voice spoke in the darkness. “Take what is yours, Seh’hali.” Nagi? Veyl turned, searching for the Qwilki woman and finding nothing but the whales. “Do not fear the boundless might bearing in on you. Embrace the gift the wave dancer has awoken in you and open yourself to all that you must be.” The Qwilki woman was still nowhere to be seen, but her voice came from all directions now. Veyl focused on the whales again, watching the group part to pass around her, reaching out to touch them. Another creature emerged from the darkness, approaching swiftly, its long body undulating through the water as it wove between the larger beasts. When it drew closer, she recognized the shimmering scales of a ji’ikyan, one of the serpents that had nearly ended her life with its sting.

For me, very. Unless your characters have some magical reason for it to be otherwise or are not human, I feel like injuries, combat, etc. are ideal places to ground the story in reality. For me, having those things be believable helps me suspend belief when it is important.
