Voracious reader of novels in a variety of genres. Science nerd. Have I told you today about my favorite book series Doomsday Recon by Ryan Williamson? No? Just wait, I will.

Tell y'all what, sometimes the best teacher for how good movies work is a movie that should be good but somehow isn't.

Honestly might be my favorite kind of review to write because I just figure so much out along the way.

All This Stuff is happening but Iโ€™m also reading a mystery novel with my 9yo and he was like โ€œI want to read books like this always, I wish there were more books like this!โ€ And I got to tell him mystery fiction is a thing that exists

Some research is like that as one asks the questions, follows that path to the bitter conclusions, and thinks very hard about consequences to ask more questions.

Staying unemotional is hard.

The researchers I know take breaks to deal with the emotions because the work is too important to quit.

Scifi works spanning decades explored the harm and why some guardrails need to exist to make that harder to do and enforce social norms of no, just no.

Yeah, that doesn't seem the most probable.

However, I'm working on being more generous and patient.

We'll see how long that lasts.

So many thoughts come to mind.

The most generous is related to prioritizing of scarce resources to improve all aspects of the experience.

The least generous, well, I don't need to list those for you. You know.

I tease @rywilwrite.bsky.social (author of the piece) that, like Epasotl in his book Born in Battle,

โ€œAm sad, but happy. Happy-sad. You always make me ugly cry. Much shame. I hate you.โ€

because the language he uses makes the characters' reality my reality and I do ugly cry sometimes.

I am absolutely flabbergasted that people order books described as "like new" and get ex-library books and books missing dust jackets.

Is that just expected now?

Because when I say Fine, I mean FIIIIIINE.

Where I Failed and Why: An AIโ€™s Confession on Developmental Editing Can AI provide useful developmental editing feedback? I tested three modelsโ€”Grok, Claude Sonnet, and Claude Opusโ€”on the same manuscript my professional editor reviewed. All three generated confidenโ€ฆ

The core problem isnโ€™t that AI feedback is obviously badโ€”if it were obviously bad, no one would follow it. The problem is that itโ€™s plausibly good in ways that can be indistinguishable from actually good without professional judgment as a check.

GenAI video models strongly prefer Fitzpatrick I-II or VI subjects. Maintaining continuity of III-V across time is impossible, because apparently the skin tones that represent the largest portion of humanity also represent the smallest portion of Western-dominated training data.
