You canโ€™t choose the times you live in. And sadly we live in an age of extinction I wonder who the last person in Ireland was to hear a wolf howl. Did they realise the magnitude of what they were hearing?

'Urban geology': How to find fossils (and other discoveries) in your city's buildings If you look closer at the building stones, tiles and pavements of the big city, you can find a hidden world of geology and history, from fascinating fossils to unusual rocks.

This was a lot of fun to write for the BBC - the joys of 'urban geology': fossil-hunting and more in the buildings of central London with @pavementgeology.bsky.social. She even showed me a possible dinosaur bone! #urbangeology www.bbc.com/future/artic...

Why 40 wolves have shaken Danish politics Even this small number has sparked fierce debates over livestock and public safety in one of Europe's most intensively farmed countries

In Denmark if you're left-leaning or young, you're much more likely to understand that wolves are positive for ecosystems. If you're right-wing or older, the chances diminish substantially.

These ancient bumblebees were found with their pollen source Insects have long pollinated plants, but evidence of ancient pairing is rare. Fossils now show bees and linden trees goes back 24 million years.

Scientists just found several fossil bumblebees covered in pollen that directly matches fossil flowers nearby.

The 24-million-year-old discovery reveals the oldest known evidence connecting pollinators to the pollinated.

Museums, galleries & heritage sites are a forgotten part of the public sector. Austerity meant closing buildings, mothballing artefacts, laying off highly skilled staff & freezing pay for years. A national disgrace 10x worse for smaller regional institutions. Go and donate now.

A coloured photograph showing a model Dinoceras from five different angles. The creature is grey and elephant-like in body, but its head is truly extraordinary and almost indescribable. It is a bit like a rhino in form, but has two large down-facing sabre-teeth, four horns on its nose, flappy ears and two giant protuberances on its forehead, looking a bit like Mickey Mouse ears, but more upright. It is standing on a wooden stand, and has quizzical look, as if it querying why it is being observed.
