So yeah just ignore most of the actual mech combat, use the lore (especially for the mechs) as loose guidelines at best, treat it like D&D instead of mecha premisewise, and try to lean into diceless roleplaying instead and you will have a LOT more fun trust me.

I play Lancer because I get to be dubious but powerful women with violent and passionate love affairs and a long, long list of kills to my name in whatever interesting world the GM comes up with, not because I think it's a good 'mecha' game, it's just a good 4e fork that someone still updates.

Playing Lancer for me is the continuous realization that none of the fantasies I'd have in an actual mecha game are valid or feasible, except for the pilot drama ones if the GM and other players are good (learn how to vet for this in any game).

Literally Shining Finger exists in Lancer and it is one of the most garbo systems in the game because even if it kills the guy (on average it will if they don't have structure which a lot of GMs will give at high levels) it also stuns you so the other 5 guys who are just as strong will just kill you

In a mecha show if the hundred man slayer raging demon fist fails, it's because I need to be humbled, lose, and run away in order to learn a better surefire kill technique (or because I'm meant to die here). In Lancer it's because you rolled below a 10 at high levels or a Mirage is alive somewhere.

Lancer doesn't feel like mecha because my Zheng can just use it's supermove without build up, and after a few levels regular non toyetic grunts can just nosell or tank it and I usually can't just walk around them or run away with minimal consequences either.

like people hype up how much real robot is supposed to care about unit tactics as if the inevitable showdown doesn't end up being one guy or girl screaming against one big or equally powerful small thing and also a background not directly relevant separate duel happens sometimes anyway.

Genuinely tell me when even a real robot series has had anything other than one protag in a supermech kicking ass against disposable grunts with maybe one really big guy with a gimmick as the main bulk of it's fight scenes (I have watched most Gundams, Macross, and all of VOTOMs among others)

A convo happened in a server I'm in about why #LancerRPG is outsider art that doesn't really feel like the #mecha shows people think it's emulating and I'd argue that the cardinal sin of Lancer is simple, it's a group combat tabletop RPG.

If you don't have a love-hate relationship with and an extensive catalogue of read, watched, and played works of the genre you're trying to deconstruct I have no interest in your drivel.
