We’re all preloading our β€œWar on Christmas” skeets for December when ICE is tackling and pepper balling a dozen Santas, right?

i would not be surprised if business types, particular family business tyrants, are starting to sweat things as their cravings for ~labor discipline ~ have given way to fears of labor shortage

if we'd treated their obvious baldfaced lies and deflections more like this over the past eight years maybe we wouldn't be in this situation

shocking how easy it is when you actually see it done

This is infuriating. She excuses the orders as "preliminary," but that's an argument for applying settled law or preserving the status quo. Allowing POTUS to disregard Congressional appropriations and fire independent agency heads are neither, they're a radical restructuring of Constitutional order.

Schiff: "You begin to wonder -- do they believe they have the authority by putting some groups on a list, even domestic groups, to use lethal force against them, with no trial, no due process, no nothing? The reality is we can't rule that out."

Another effort to track ICE raids was just taken offline People over Papers was removed by Padlet, the platform it was built on, yesterday.

Identifying public officials isn't "doxing." People have the right to know who is working for their government. Nor, for that matter, is it "radical left-wing terrorism." So it's frustrating to see platforms caving to these bad faith characterizations. www.technologyreview.com/2025/10/06/1...

The stuff in the Baltic isn't really getting the traction over here it might. We're currently doing seabed surveys off Gdansk in Poland but have lost well over a week now to GPS jamming and spoofing originating in Kaliningrad making the vessel's systems show it as being off Sweden.

Journos can just state that there have only been small, mostly peaceful protests at one spot in Portland. There's no reason to cite the PD or Democratic officials or anyone else to debunk Trump's nonsense. That the city isn't burning or being overrun with antifa super-soldiers is objective reality.

Federal agents have been intimidating us over our reporting since June. Attacks on the press didn't start this month.

In the last several weeks, we've witnessed a horrifying escalation of violence against protesters, neighbors, anyone who comes near these agents. They are out of control.

Well, yeah, we're suing ICE.

This wasn't really a hard decision. As little faith as we have in institutions, we recognize the value of drawing visible lines in the sand. We drew ours personally a while ago, but better late than never.

May every protester be freed and may this occupation end.

Whether it's Republicans flagrantly abusing Articles One and Two of the Constitution or Democrats being bad at messaging, both parties are pushing America to the brink.

He’s the only Republican there. He sent all the rest of them home again to avoid a vote on the Epstein files. Since Johnson has become Speaker they have probably been in recess at least 3 out of every 4 days. And they’ve done NOTHING on health care for years. bsky.app/profile/atru...

Look, I'll take every opportunity to remind the world that Stephen Miller has a BA from Duke University but as he lectures a federal judge about the letter of the law, I'd like to remind the world that is his *only* degree and he never went to law school. A Duke degree is all this kind of guy needs.

The extent to which the entire edifice of your life is based on the precarious thread of being basically 100% healthy is hard to understand in your 20s, I think.

There's a simple way of getting people to stop calling Trump and his sycophants Nazis and ICE the Gestapo: return to the rule of law.

That won't happen.

The wild, extremist lurch of the GOP is truly the only news story of the last 30 years. More or less every political story (SCOTUS, Trump, civil rights, COVID, Tea Party, climate change etc etc) in that time is a smaller story explained by, and demonstrative of, that one major trend.

Look. Invading our own country is about as straightforward a case as you can have for impeachment. The GOP abandoning the Constitution is kind of the only story there is and it gets no coverage.

I still think about that exchange. It remains one of the most startling examples of sheer indifference to journalistic integrity that I've come across. That's the team that will now run CBS News. Surreal.

And courts clarify disputes when it's unclear exactly what laws and the constitution mean. No one is "in charge" in any absolute sense. This is all Intro to US Politics stuff; abandoning it means abandoning the Constitution and adopting some other system of government.

Yes. More broadly: There are no absolute powers in the United States Constitution of *separated institutions sharing powers.* The president is commander in chief...but Congress can and does make all sorts of laws specifying what the military will be and how it will operate.

I’m just going to keep repeating that undocumented immigrant workers actually _help subsidize federal programs for everybody else_.

In 2022 alone, they paid $25.7 billion into Social Security and $6.4 billion into Medicareβ€”both programs they can’t access due to their legal statusπŸ‘‡πŸ½

We built the best biomedical research system in history by centering peer review and we're trading it in for a system based on the whims of hacks and cranks.

Your daughter wants you to make up a bedtime story about puppies - to write that for you." We will get to the point, she says with a grim laugh, "that you will essentially become just a skin bag of organs and bones, nothing else. You won't know anything and you will be told repeatedly that you can't do it, which is the opposite of what life has to offer. Capitulating all kinds of decisions like where to go on vacation, what to wear today, who to date, what to eat.
People are already doing this. You won't have to process grief, because you'll have uploaded photos and voice messages from your mother who just died, and then she can talk to you via AI video call every day. One of the ways it's going to destroy humans, long before there's a nuclear disaster, is going to be the emotional hollowing-out of people." - author and filmmaker Justine Bateman from a piece by Emine Saner for the Guardian

The lesson of the Trump era is to stick with your principles. He’s coming for you anyway, whether you do or not, so you might as well stick to your principles so people don’t laugh at you afterward and you can look yourself in the mirror.
