For the 1967 Beatles song "A Day In The Life", Lennon and McCartney came up with the idea to record an improvised orchestra section. However, producer George Martin advised against asking classically trained musicians to play without a score, since they simply wouldn't know what to do. Lennon suggested to put the orchestra members in silly party hats and rubber noses to loosen them up and get them into the spirit.
