On the left is a photograph taken on my visit to the lava channel Búrfellsgjá, it shows the Lava rocks protruding in the sun light with the other side in shadow. On the right is my framed oil painting of this scene hung on the wall in a living room.

It's important to me to experience the places I paint. On location the weather & light greatly influences the landscape at that moment. On my visit to Búrfellsgjá the sun was out and created a very different scene with half of the channel covered in shade.

The experience of seeing a glacier is something else! Here are some studies I did on location over the summer. I’d been trying to paint from this vista all week but it was constantly covered in cloud... until the last day! 😅 Hooray!

Everyone was reminded of Iceland’s fiery heart with the eruption in Fagradalsfjall 2021. I will never forget avidly following the eruption via the webcams & with my paintbrush. It was the first eruption I ever experienced with my own eyes.
