I'm uncomfortable with the inevitable "his work was always crap" because it seems to say "you can tell who the predators are by how well they write" and ... no no you absolutely cannot, that's the whole point.

Amanda Palmer faking her own suicide, recording her then-boyfriend's reaction, using it on an album after he himself had died, and then TELLING THE STORY LIKE IT WAS A FUNNY ANECDOTE ON STAGE was the moment I went from mere dislike to thinking she was dangerous. Absolutely fuck her.

I don't know what to say about this article except, if you are able, to read it. It is utterly devastating and incredibly important. It is also incredibly painful so be very careful if you do choose to click through.

Picture of The Summer of My Amazing Luck by Miriam Toews on top of a small white bookcase surrounded by a pink lava lamp, a mug full of bookmarks, and a white coaster depicting a stack of Jane Austen novels.
4. The Summer of My Amazing Luck by Miriam Toews - look, everything Toews writes was made specifically to delight me. You can tell this is an early novel but only in the sense that she only gets better from a stellar start. The blend of humour and melancholy is everything I want in a novel.

Sorry, forgot to include titles/authors for the first three. Pictured in this order: Trans Wizard Harriet Porber and the Bad Boy Parasaurolophus by Chuck Tingle; Skysteppers by Katherine Rundell; and Red, Dust, White Snow by Pan Huiting.

3. This was a disappointment. The premise was really interesting but the writing was only so-so and the plot was poorly executed - it just sort of didn't go anywhere?

2. This was very cute and a worthy addition to Rooftoppers. I did not expect there to be so much Monte Cristo in there and it does spoil the basic plot so beware! Rundell's writing is just delicious though and her descriptions are fantastic (and often v funny).

Stuff I have read in 2025 📚
Will she keep up with a thread? Will she immediately forget? Who can say. Nonetheless, here we are.
1. Starting off the year with the serious energy I want to manifest in 2025. This was good, though I preferred the previous couple I read. Worth it for the following tho:

A random reminder that not all disabled people are in wheelchairs. I bring this up because I've lost count of the amount of people who say they can help with something because I am disabled only to turn up and get angry that I can walk. Disability can look like anything.
