I’m excited about The Odyssey because I’m a big Christopher Nolan fan. But that movie is going to have to be damn near perfect to live up to all the hype of this past year. Tickets on sale a year early. A 6 minute “prologue” trailer. Come on now.

My favorite is how they’ll say “AI is here to make your job easier” and then in like the same interview also say “AI is going to take all the jobs” and somehow think we won’t notice. It’s like they have the object permanence of an infant who thinks we disappear if they’re not talking to us.

We’re training on our new software system at work this week and I have been transported back to my “smartest nerd in class” high school self who is totally impatient with everyone else in class who’s picking it up slower than me. 😆

This is why I am very much terrified of my rent someday outpacing my income, because I’ve been living on my own for almost 25 yrs & I wouldn’t know where to start looking for a roommate that I could stand or that could stand me (the second being the biggest issue most likely after so much time 😆).

I have to get up early tomorrow to be in the office early for training, but I also have finish getting my Apt ready for our regular pest treatment tomorrow before I can go to bed & I also need to figure out what I’m going to do about my lease soon & I would very much like for life to settle down.

I’ve read a lot of Grady Hendrix’s pop horror books, and enjoyed them. But I just finished Witchcraft for Wayward Girls, and it was unexpectedly moving. Set in a home for unwed mothers in 1970, the real horror is in what society put those poor girls through. Recommended.

The follow up episode 12 about how the program used in Steubenville was developed is also really interesting to help understand why it works.

It highlights what’s possible, but also doesn’t flinch away from the challenges that can get in the way, especially in poor schools. It’s inspiring but also seems like it would be difficult to scale. Because in the end, the issue is that learning is complicated but we keep looking for easy answers.

I listened to the original 6-episode run of “Sold A Story” last night, but have been listening to the later follow up episodes in the series today. The most interesting episode in the whole series might be Ep. 11 The Outlier about the successful program in Steubenville, OH.

(Context: Jesuits, while still Catholic & all that implies, are dedicated to intellectual rigor and education. They may or may not have disagreed with the position, but they’d never have let that kind of writing stand. For example, Georgetown is a Jesuit university.)

Good thread. I’ve also seen a lot of folks trying to make comparisons based on their Jesuit Catholic education, and they are not the same sort of thing at all either.

I started listening to the “Sold a Story” podcast about the whole-language or three-cuing method they’ve used to teach kids to read recently. And the more I understand about it, I’m kinda realizing this weary-wary error is exactly the kind of error you would expect from learning to read that way. 🤔
