David Nicholls writes funny novels about love and human frailty. YOU ARE HERE is probably his best. As well as endearing characters, this one takes you on a hike from coast to coast in northern England.

The Square of Sevens by Laura Shepherd-Robinson is a sweeping Dickensian story that grips you through all its many twists and turns. A totally satisfying historical novel.

Adrian McKinty writes with keen humor about the Northern Ireland Troubles. Humor? His Catholic detective needs it to survive in the Protestant RUC. Narrator Gerard Doyle’s deadpan delivery is perfect.

It’s all about the narrator. Donna Leon’s Commissario Brunetti series is rich in atmospheric detail. David Colacci’s narration lets you hear the water of the Gran Canale slap against the embarcadero.

Miranda July’s novel “All Fours” tells of a woman who escapes the routine of family life to find her true self. Sex plays a large role. Erica Jong told a similar story in the Sixties. It still resonates.

Classic mysteries are comfort food to me. Ngaio Marsh’s Roderick Alleyn series is great for a day in bed when you’re feeling under the weather.

Sally Rooney is flavor of the month and Intermezzo is on many Best Books lists. Not an easy read: little punctuation and mixes interior monologue with dialogue. Rooney goes deep, deep into the characters. It’s complicated, like life.

Liz Moore’s The God of the Woods: a mystery that made it onto lots of Best Books list. Well deserved. Good writing, and there’s a map! I love a map.
