I wrote about TrΒ΅mp's invocation of the Alien Enemies Act, the abduction of Mahmoud Khalil, the trial of Mitsuye Endo, the example of Japanese American incarceration, pledging allegiance to war, the inherence of fascism, and my grandfather's Alien Enemy Wind-Up Dollβ’ @thebaffler.com: t.ly/n07l7

'In a dictatorship, metaphors can save you': The poetry of Ghayath Almadhoun
The poet says that while censorship in a dictatorship is nothing new, the same in a democracy feels like entering a new totalitarianism
"You could smell the fear everywhere. But under the Syrian regime, you could hide the real meaning behind your words with metaphors. Metaphors would save you," Almadhoun explains."

(for S.D.)
Sometimes I agreed with you
to make you stop telling me things.
I was a fist closed around a rock.
For a long time nothing changed.
It was like driving all day through Texas.
But now I've stopped
tearing the arm off the waiting-room chair,
and sneaking back at night to fix it.
And the change was like light
moving through a prism, red
turning to yellow, green to blue,
and all by insensible degrees.
For a long time nothing changed.
It was like driving all day through Texas.
