We all know you make it rain by imitating rain. Splashing the blood of a sacrifice against the altar, for instance.

I have no claim to expertise. But I've read about the former in the context of North American cultures where gender identity had religious significance and the latter in the context of European blood feuds. To me, 17th century England is fundamentally still our culture.

On point 1, the cultural context can be radically different. In some cultures, people were identified as trans at birth (i.e., by their parents). And in others, self identification was often due to socioeconomic necessity (e.g., no surviving adult male family members).

I learned today that the some Greenlandic placenames combine both the -ssuaq affix for "large" and the -nngua affix for "small". Example: Kangerlussuannguaq, meaning Little Big Fjord. This name appears four times on the Oqaasileriffik maps, describing fjords that are short but wide. Cute!

I think a lot of people are drawn to it because of personal experiences that don't fit within the surrounding normative framework. Probably such experiences correlate with neurodiversity, such as it is.
