Why Climate Change is Making Greenland Desirable to Trump Climate change may be opening up new economic and strategic opportunities in Greenland. Reality is more complicated.

Complicated is right. I'll keep talking to anyone who will listen. Mining Greenland isn't the best idea.

Smith says Alberta taxpayers need to be protected from coal lawsuits as moratorium lifted | Globalnews.ca Smith says the potential liability facing Alberta means the government needs to take the lawsuits seriously and taxpayers need to be protected.

β€œSo in exchange for keeping their eggs off their face, they’re sacrificing our eastern slopes and our water,” Lund said on Tuesday.

β€œWhatever it costs in court is a tiny, tiny fraction of what it’s going to cost the taxpayers years from now to clean this mess up.”

Corb gets it. The UCP does not.

We know that mobility in cities is about space. More specifically, more trips in less space. We’ve seen lots of great images reinforcing that point. This one might be my favourite, from #Santiago, because it ALSO shows the inequality of having buses run in mixed traffic.

Dedicated bus-only lanes.

There’s no less efficient use of space than designing our cities around cars first. It’s also elitist, as it punishes those who can’t afford cars, making them nothing more than an afterthought.

Separated Bike Lanes Means Safer Streets, Study Says β€” Streetsblog USA Cities that build protected lanes for cyclists end up with safer roads for people on bikesΒ and people in cars and on foot, a new studyΒ of 12 large metropolises revealed Wednesday.

Never forget, a 13-year study found that protected bike-lanes led to a drastic decline in fatalities for all road users.

ALL ROAD USERS.

And painted bike-lanes? No safety improvement at all. For sharrows, it’s actually safer to NOT have them.

Opinion | A Bird Flu Pandemic Would Be One of the Most Foreseeable Catastrophes in History It’s not too late for President Biden to give the U.S. a life-changing gift.

As H5N1 continues to spread among farm animals, we're playing a deadly game of Russian roulette with pandemic risk. H5N1 in pigs creates new risks of mixing among flu variants, which could lead to the emergence of an H5N1 strain capable of human to human transmission. www.nytimes.com/2024/11/29/o...

In unadjusted analyses, the mean weekly ratio between hospital-onset and community-onset infections increased from 2.9% prior to Omicron dominance to 7.6% (95% CI, 6.0%-9.1%) during Omicron dominance. After universal masking and testing ended, it increased to 15.5% (95% CI, 13.6%-17.4%), then fell to 8.0% (95% CI, 5.0%-11.0%) following resumption of masking among health care workers. Under the adjusted Poisson model (Figure), cessation of universal masking and testing was associated with a 25% increase in hospital-onset respiratory viral infections compared with the preceding Omicron-dominant period (rate ratio [RR], 1.25; 95% CI, 1.02-1.53), and resumption of masking among staff was associated with a 33% decrease in hospital-onset respiratory viral infections (RR, 0.67; 95% CI, 0.52-0.85).

This paper is interesting for a few reasons. It shows that mask mandates in healthcare protect patients from infections, and removing mask mandates in healthcare harms patients.

A facility without a mask mandate is making a *deliberate choice* known to harm patients.

All true. All contribute tax $ to private h/c insurance plans.

In addition we contribute trained personnel and resources from the public system to the private.

Splitting our system does not save us money - it costs us more.

The hallmarks of effective systems are universality and integration.

Screenshot of the study published yesterday Annals of Neurology. Title: Neurologic Manifestations of Long COVID Disproportionately Affect Young and Middle-Age Adults. Interpretation: Younger and middle-age individuals are disproportionally affected by post-acute sequelae of SARS-CoV-2 infection (Neuro-PASC) regardless of acute COVID-19 severity. Although older people more frequently have abnormal neurologic findings and comorbidities, younger and middle-age patients suffer from a higher burden of Neuro-PASC symptoms and cognitive dysfunction contributing to decreased QoL. Neuro-PASC principally affects adults in their prime, contributing to profound public health and socioeconomic impacts warranting dedicated resources for prevention, diagnosis and interventions. You may think that neurological symptoms in #LongCovid are for old people, but it is the opposite. Young adults (18–44 years) and middle-aged (45–64 years) with mild acute #COVID cases (non-hospitalized), represent 90% of the cases of #NeuroCovid. Read here: onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1002/...
