Highway removal & relocation is kind of a prerequisite for revitalizing downtown Pittsburgh. I-579 needs to be demolished, with the highway system reconfigured into a ring road setup (as Paris has done).

We have to build the city we want now, we can’t wait for it to happen naturally.

It should be demolished, and the right of way used to expand the river trail.

Fun fact: The Three Sisters Bridges are a unique type of suspension bridge. Instead of using a chain, like the Golden Gate Bridge does, they are suspended by layered steel eyebars (those metal plates with circles on both ends).

Pittsburgh is not a conservative city, lol. There are Republicans in the suburbs & exurbs (just like NYC), but the city itself is reliably progressive.

I don’t see how enforcement would be any different. Just like in Manhattan, they’d put license plate cameras at all the entrances (e.g. highway exits, bridges, through streets). It’s especially easy if the zone is Downtown, since the geography is similar to Manhattan.

Downtown Pittsburgh is literally perfect for congestion pricing. Not only would it alleviate the traffic, but it would also speed up buses that terminate in the Triangle.
