I do wonder if some people were so affected by being asked to *think of others* during the pandemic that it has permanently warped their brains and they can no longer empathise. Social media only seems to add to the damage. A lack of empathy really does seem to be at the root of so much of the hate.

Really rotten how the gays blocked paid family leave and made sure new parents got stuck with 50K hospital bills and then blocked Republican efforts to create affordable childcare and then on the way to the sex party that one night we rescinded the child tax credit.

I do think American politics has been corrupted by consumerism and toxic individualism. Withholding our vote unless we have been properly marketed to and courted is not how this is supposed to work. Voting is our civic duty. Defending our democracy is our civic duty as American citizens.
