The number of times I caught fellow scientists out for failing to grasp the fundamental rule all humanities students learn: always use primary sources. Using the last researcher’s interpretation while citing the original 😱 leads to long excursions up the wrong path. Grateful for my yr in humanities

Calculus really clicked for me when a soils and geo lecturer put up a slide of an acid sulphate plume moving down a local river. It was the start of a love affair with plume modelling.

I enrolled to do History and Philosophy of Science because I didn’t think I could do science. Cross-registered into a couple of science subjects, aced them, changed my enrolment and went on to get a PhD. Would love to rub it into the noses of all my old (likely dead) high school teachers

Me too! Maths failure at school. Went on to work as bookkeeper on and off during my 20s and 30s, developed lots of tricks to overcome my dyslexia. Went to uni in my 40s and did calculus and statistics. Compared to fellow students who mastered maths early, I had to work really, really hard.

The ‘official’ story is that he had one arm underneath him and they were trying to get him to put it behind his back, though how he was supposed to do that with 2 officers sitting on him remains a mystery. I hope the young man is OK, and the officers get suitably punished
