Dear science communicators and scientists,

Can we please be mindful of how we frame our videos?

The vast majority of companies that employ hundreds/thousands of scientists are NOT lying about things you can easily test with household items.

Views shouldn’t be the only metric we care about.

Do They Work? Colorescience SPF Powder, Skinnies β€œPea-Sized Amount” | Lab Muffin Beauty Science ve had a lot of questions about certain sunscreen products with unusual claims, and what I think of them. I'll be talking about what I personally think of the claims for 2 products in this post…

Even more useless than sprays, sadly. I haven't done a test on them but I analysed Colorescience's data a while back labmuffin.com/do-they-work...

I was going to skip this year, I don't really have many new recommendations!

At a certain size, the particles just stop in midair (physics!). The lighter the spray, the more drifts off. And what coverage you get is spotty.

Is it better than nothing? Well, a rice grain of sunscreen is technically "better than nothing", but I'm not going to recommend it.

Seeing a lot of people recommending sunscreen mists... unfortunately they're really not that effective for applying to your face, sorry!

See the cloud lingering in the air? That's sunscreen NOT going on your skin - my experiments estimated that 80-95% of the sunscreen doesn't land.

New safeguards for Australian sunscreens, because specific ingredients "aren't safe"? Here's what that actually means!

Sorry but this is pseudoscientific fearmongering, is your source the EWG? They're not a scientific organisation, they're antivax and anti-fluoride.

The "American dirty 4" are approved in every region. The EU reassessed them as safe in 2021/2022, Australia did as well last week.

It's not even the "not tested on animals" label, it's that they wouldn't be able to use the sunscreen ingredients anywhere that has a cosmetic animal testing ban and cosmetic sunscreens e.g. Europe

US Sunscreens Aren’t Safe in the EU? The Science | Lab Muffin Beauty Science There's been a lot of fearmongering about chemical sunscreens. There were scary-sounding new stories – sunscreen absorbing into blood, killing coral reefs, zinc oxide being toxic…

Eye sting is an issue, but it's often ingredients other than chemical sunscreens, and it's an issue with sunscreens from other countries.

As stated above, EU approved levels are similar to US levels: labmuffin.com/us-sunscreen...

Longer explanation of EU regulations and how "not safe" doesn't mean "toxic", because "safe" in a regulatory toxicology context is a very high bar.

Sigh... no. The commonly used chemical sunscreens are all approved in the EU as well, the differences are pretty minor. US sunscreens aren't much more "toxic" than elsewhere.

But the newer filters give formulators more tools, so they can make much nicer sunscreens that you actually WANT to use.

Ehhh, kind of - sunscreen is a drug in Australia and we've also had the new filters for about 20 years. It's more about the US's specific regulatory requirements, rather than an inherent drug vs cosmetic problem per se.

We could do much more. Polls consistently show that the majority of the public, especially low-income communities and communities of color, support mask mandates. But because many places have dropped mask mandates, fewer people are wearing masks. CDC research shows that people are more willing to wear a mask when there’s high Covid transmission, but most also think Covid-19 transmission levels are much lower than they actually are. Another barrier is that a number of people can’t afford N95 and KN95 masks, but the government is not providing them for free. Widespread disinformation about the science of masks undermines policy and education efforts that can bridge these gaps.

No, the data always showed peer pressure was the issue, and that's highly influenced by role modelling from political leaders. Not to mention perceived risk and information gaps.

My pet conspiracy theory is that the US uses Fahrenheit as part of a concerted effort to keep the population scientifically illiterate, so everyone is forced to hire experts to help them with tasks that shouldn't need it.
