Is my offering or reflection efficacious for them? Is it consensual to provide it? What are my expectations in sharing? Who am I/ how am I processing this thing later?

Every relationship is an exchange of energy, we can’t block the positive experiences we have with clients, the things we learn from them, ways they show us something within us, in parallel. We can’t still be a human in the relationship, while having ethics.

How do my therapist/ helper colleagues sit with the fact that most of our human connections since Covid (and maybe ever) are with clients? The power dynamic creates social comfort, but doesn’t allow for balance in need or accountability.

your romantic/ sxual relationship doesn't have to be the center of your world for it to be a safe connection. We are actually safer when we spread our needs across multiple supportive humans, putting less pressure on a primary connection.

The pauses can be just 10/15 seconds, but they are important to showing empathy because they give space for the feeling to exist outside the words.

Empathy skills school- if you manage the courage to listen to someone share a strong feeling, then do two things: pause. Say something that demonstrates you were listening and one that you care. Ie: woah you’re really going through it, thanks for trusting me to listen. Pause again.
