Our new episode on Star Trek ENT's "Regeneration" is out today! The Bad Astronomer himself, @philplait.bsky.social, joined us to talk about this time-traveling Borg episode! Will the crew escape assimilation? And more importantly, will they remember to write any of this down for future generations?

This was a hilarious episode and a much needed palate cleanser after Cogenitor

Extra thanks to @ericlesch.bsky.social who came up with the pun "iceborg" for our title. We went with "Tip of the Iceborg!" but other potential titles were:
Iceborg! Dead Ahead!
Watch Out for Iceborgs!
Beware of Iceborgs!
The Iceborg Cometh!

Fun fact about Star Trek Enterprise! In the first 50 episodes of the show, Captain Archer is abducted, stranded, or otherwise in dire need of rescue in 32% of them, which is higher than the percent of women serving on the NX-01! (fact courtesy of @ericlesch.bsky.social who checked all 50 episodes)

Thank you so much @enterprisesplain.bsky.social for having me on as a guest on this week’s podcast episode about the Star Trek Enterprise episode “Cogenitor”!

12.02.2026 19:38 — 👍 6    🔁 1    💬 1    📌 0

This is so spot on! The writers clearly wanted to use the “third gender” thing as just a quirky alien trait, akin to a bumpy head or eating weird foods. They didn’t actually seem that interested in unpacking what it would mean for a species to have three sexes.

If you finish today's episode and still feel like 4hrs of discussion wasn't enough for you, both @firstflightpod.bsky.social and Women at Warp pod have great episodes discussing Cogenitor that we highly recommend for some differing perspectives.

If you listened to us discuss Star Trek ENT's episode Cogenitor for 2hrs last week and felt like it wasn't quite enough -- good news! We discuss it for an additional 2hrs this week! It was a meaty episode with so many different aspects of it discuss and we get into ALL OF IT.

Here at EnterpriseSplaining we are on a Second Contact mission today, revisiting the Star Trek ENT episode Cogenitor. @mxdax.bsky.social joins us as we discuss how this episode handles nonbinary gender and how it compares to similarly themed episodes in TNG and Alien Nation.

#StarTrek ENT's Cogenitor was directed by LaVar Burton and probably had some of the most beautiful cinematography that we have seen thus far on Enterprise. Since we can't share photos on our audio-only podcast, I wanted to put some of my favorite screengrabs from the episode here. 🧵

Our episode on #startrek ENT's Cogenitor is out today and it was a contentious one! Trip has trouble getting his head around genders that aren't male or female, Archer goes on a romantic getaway with an alien captain, and Malcolm ...well, the less we have to say about what he was up to the better.

I (@uajamie.bsky.social) haven’t yet seen Voyager, but I showed that screengrab to my co-hosts during the recording and they both immediately pegged it as a VOY reference.

Our long-awaited episode on Cogenitor is finally out and boy do we have a lot of opinions on it. In particular, you can hear Maria and Bill's absolute shock in real time as they learn about the final scene in the episode.

Ok, so… we all are in agreement that the movies shown on the screen in the Star Trek ENT episode Cogenitor are porn titles, right? I mean “Jailhouse Promise” and “Strange Case of Mr Cigars” COME ON

I just finished posting this thread of all my favorite screen grabs from the Star Trek ENT episode Cogenitor. Say what you want about the episode’s content, but LaVar Burton’s directing on it was exceptional.

Anyways, we had a lot of opinions and discussion about the actual content of Cogenitor, but I didn't think we could convey in audio form how beautiful this episode was to look at. LaVar Burton put so much care and thought into every shot. You can hear our full discussion on the episode here.

Lastly, we had A LOT of reactions to the content of the final scene on our pod, but the camera work was stunning. It's hard to capture in a screen grab, but Archer and Trip are in almost every shot, but the focus shifts between them based on whose emotional reaction Burton wants us to focus on.

Truly the less we say about what Malcolm was up to in this episode the better, but even these very silly scenes are shot beautifully with backlit lighting and symmetry.

We used this as our main image for the episode, but it's worth taking longer to look at. It's beautiful with the way it's backlit and their reflections in the table. And the wide shot shows how close they are sitting, as their relationship grows closer.

This cheese platter looks so delicious, but the detail that there is an entire pineapple in the middle, which implies that they are growing pineapples on the Enterprise, is very funny.

I mean, seriously, just look at these two! It really makes it clear how small and cramped the shuttle is, but they always look like they are having a great time.
