Interesting read. Older smokers collateral damage. Never factored in 'youth protection' is their ex-smoker (now vaper) parents limiting access to THR and the $10 ciggies offer an easy temptation to relapse. Youth I'm sure would like their parents alive to see their 40th birthday.

I gave up smoking in 2011. It took me 2 days to switch to vaping. None of my kids has ever seen me smoke. Since that time the government, aus public health and NGO's bit by bit have made it harder for me (and many others) to source what keeps us from smoking. Its a disgrace tbh.

Alcohol kills/causes cancer. Can we ban that ?

A good reason is demand. Just because you don't like it and want it banned it doesn't mean it will just disappear if it was banned. High-crime not attributable to smoking, but to extortionate taxes creating a high-profit opportunity for crims, but I get the feeling you already know that.

He must have looked back at previous interviews with you (and Colin) and decided this was the default way to start an interview with you.

So making smoking illegal will be different and more successful than making drugs illegal because nobody smokes inside pubs anymore. Have you thought this through?

17.02.2026 06:54 β€” πŸ‘ 1    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

Because banning stuff *always* works.

Its even more tempting to return to smoking for 'caged' vapers now we have $12-$15 Manchesters. I used to see lots of discarded disposables (do still see the odd one), but now see many more discarded Manchester packs. Anecdotal, but has been noticeable for me.

I would prefer reformation to defunding tbh. Time to swap out the neo-prohibitionist pro-stigma guard for those with more understanding of humanity. They (like many others) have used demonisation as a tool to justify further (or more) funding.

Its always been a manufactured panic. A PR exercise to raise and sustain a funding stream for all the pigs at the trough.

Agree. The shift from anti-tobacco to anti-nicotine happened quite some time ago. They saw the threat to their ecosystem and re-arranged the goal posts likely driven by WHO initiatives.

It may interest you - the other week I had to fast for a blood test (no caffeine, nicotine, only water). Mixed up a bottle of 0 nic liquid. Was (very) surprised that I had no withdrawals after 22 hours without nic. I am usually on 10mg (neither high or low).

If all the genuine vape stores weren't forcibly closed down perhaps more users wouldn't have to resort to admittedly inferior (but still vastly safer than smoking) disposable product

After all these years (and even after they got their way) they're still pumping out the same fearmongering. Was once used to raise public support for desired prohibition policy, now used to cover-up/distract from same failed policy.

Too much of a disturbance for her a$$ured career path. I truly believe this will change. When the WHO changes tact, they (the usual suspects) will as well. WHO look like fools for awarding dirty ashtray to NZ.
