Today in my bioethics course I’m teaching J. J. Thomson’s “A Defense of Abortion.” My goal, as always, is to help my undergrads learn how to think well, in community, about deeply important questions. I have a contingency plan, but this seems like an ok first step towards *doing something* to help.

FIVE "MOVES" OF MISLEADING ELECTION RUMORS FALSE EVIDENCE — The rumor is fabricated or manipulated evidence, such as false statements, deceptively edited content, and synthetic (AI-generated) content. MISINTERPRETED EVIDENCE — The rumor is based on real evidence that has been mischaracterized or misinterpreted to create a false impression. OMITTED REMEDIES — The rumor highlights real or perceived issues with election administration but overlooks or obscures remedies, such as downstream security measures, to imply an untrustworthy process or results. EXAGGERATED IMPACT — The rumor exaggerates the impact of real or perceived issues with election adminstration to imply an untrustworthy process or results. FALSE ATTRIBUTED INTENT — The rumor falsely attributes intention to real or perceived issues with election administration to imply voter or election fraud.

Most election-day rumors will take shape around some kind of “evidence” — photos, videos, first-person accounts — of voting issues. These evidence-based election rumors mislead in a few common ways:

I bike around a US city, to commute and generally get around. From my vantage point, I can see into most cars. The number of drivers on their phones is ASTRONOMICAL. I also hate how many bikes run reds, so I’m now the stubborn cyclist waiting at every red light on corridors timed for cars 😔

This sort of thing has happened to me with Canvas as well. It’s the worst. I’ve resorted to making comments in separate documents and then copy-pasting them over … which is Not Ideal.
