It reminds me of my first labor organizing job when my trainer said "The thing that's different about labor is that you just have to organize who's here" and to some extent, the older I get, the more I realize that's true everywhere.

Conservatism consists of exactly one proposition, to wit:

There must be in-groups whom the law protects but does not bind, alongside out-groups whom the law binds but does not protect.

There is nothing more or else to it, and there never has been, in any place or time.

For millenia, conservatism had no name, because no other model of polity had ever been proposed. โ€œThe king can do no wrong.โ€ In practice, this immunity was always extended to the kingโ€™s friends, however fungible a group they might have been. Today, we still have the kingโ€™s friends even where there is no king (dictator, etc.). Another way to look at this is that the king is a faction, rather than an individual.

As the core proposition of conservatism is indefensible if stated baldly, it has always been surrounded by an elaborate backwash of pseudophilosophy, amounting over time to millions of pages. All such is axiomatically dishonest and undeserving of serious scrutiny. Today, the accelerating de-education of humanity has reached a point where the market for pseudophilosophy is vanishing; it is, as The Kids Say These Days, tl;dr . All that is left is the core proposition itself โ€” backed up, no longer by misdirection and sophistry, but by violence.

So this tells us what anti-conservatism must be: the proposition that the law cannot protect anyone unless it binds everyone, and cannot bind anyone unless it protects everyone.

Frank Wilhoit seems very topical today: "Conservatism consists of exactly one proposition, to wit: There must be in-groups whom the law protectes but does not bind, alongside out-groups whom the law binds but does not protect."

Neurodiversity is Anti-Capitalist Iโ€™ve been thinking a lot lately about the concept of โ€œstrengthsโ€, and the way we define them, in relation to neurodiversity.

"A focus on earning power reinforces existing prejudices...The pursuit of capitalist-defined strengths risks excluding people with a learning disability from the neurodiversity narrative.

And researchers are driven to use economic arguments to demonstrate the value of their work."

Intersectional, multi-front coalitions mean trusting that even if other the people in the coalition aren't working on Your Segment of the problems, they're still on your side. In fact, they kind of require it. And that goes for friendships and other more intimate interpersonal relationships, too.

Nightsky | hctr.dev See live conversations from all over Bluesky as a dynamic night sky

I made a thing!

I was playing around with the AT protocol and as a little experiment I made a website that visualises activity around Bluesky: nightsky.hctr.dev

It listens to all new posts and shows them as little stars across a night sky ๐ŸŒƒ

Every star is someone, somewhere, posting something

Yes, a day off work absolutely helps! Yet another argument for a 4-day workweek (for starters) and for UBI โ€” the amount of material / emotional / cognitive resources needed for active and sustainable work of care is simply unavailable to so many folx, unfortunately.

The Onion Buys Alex Jonesโ€™s Infowars Out of Bankruptcy The satirical news site planned to turn Infowars into a parody of itself, mocking โ€œweird internet personalitiesโ€ who peddle conspiracy theories and health supplements.

Hi everyone.

The Onion, with the help of the Sandy Hook families, has purchased InfoWars.

We are planning on making it a very funny, very stupid website.

We have retained the services of some Onion and Clickhole Hall of Famers to pull this off.

I can't wait to show you what we have cooked up.

Sadly, the โ€œchild-free propagandaโ€ law has been adopted today in its 3rd reading. Disappointed But Not Surprisedโ„ข๏ธ It really does cover things like having a private conversation about postpartum depression or discussing contraception / abortion โ€œin a positive or neutral mannerโ€.

I understand that this is a wicked problem, at a macro level, but isnโ€™t it solvable at local micro levels? We have tools of critical pedagogy, we have inspirational insights about what futures are possible from folks like the late David Graeber, we have a whole scientific field of neuropolitics.

Thousands of folks with brooms coming to help their neighbors, I have never seen such a response to a climate catastrophe before, but somehow it looked so perfectly โœจnormalโœจ? As in, I imagine weโ€™d see so much of this compassion all around us if not for atomization and learned helplessness.

Iโ€™ve been reflecting on a motto from Valencia flood coverage, originating in Machadoโ€™s letter to Vygodski โ€” solo el pueblo salva al pueblo, only the people save the people. The past few years have left me disillusioned with so many institutions, yet I feel like Iโ€™ve never believed in people more.
