I don't mean to be rude, my frustration is precisely that I respect you and other commentators and I can't understand what it will take for you to accept the evidence in front of you. Imo it's an analytical disservice to exhort hope - the task has to be to start from where we truly are.

I'm sorry but how can you still be so naive? The Lab Right saw both hard Brexit and a Johnson government as acceptable prices to pay to purge the left, and we've 18 months of evidence suggesting they'll do the exact same with Farage. It's about control of the party, not the country.

In that context it's inevitable that more people will struggle to identify where the state is being honest about your wellbeing (vaccines) and where it is preparing to shank you (almost everything else). Bad faith actors and social media worsen this, but they are not the motor.

The relationship between the citizen and state in 2025 is adversarial and dishonest by design. Everyone knows they are not acting in our interests, and that they are willing to lie about that fact. They're open about this!

The context missing from this line is the widespread and correct belief that UK institutions in 2025 are not primarily concerned with your wellbeing, but on reducing the cost burden you impose.
