you also had to work out that 'numbers = songs' and then either identify and solve a four-word anagram of a track title you dont know OR realise that "drive my car" or "melissa" or "girl" are somehow thematic in clues that REQUIRE SAID WORDS TO BE IN THERE TO MAKE SENSE. Just irritating

the long anagrams were really very clever; it's just a shame that they ruined the clues they were jammed into. also feels like the kind of assumed knowledge old person thing i'd have never got without doing a lot of googling, which i never really like

Pain. Impenetrable rubric and pointlessly tortuous clues. Turns out that song titles and ANAGRAMS OF SONG TITLES (Jesus) from the Beatles’ RUBBER SOUL (ugh) were scattered (/crowbarred) within the clues, which themselves offered up hints to the two unclued silver entries (RUBBER and SOUL)

I used to think they were impossible! I’ve done a lot of them now and they *mostly* boil down to tweaks to clues or entries; usually you can break down what they’re actually asking you to do into steps and solve a bunch of clues before really having to tackle the thematic stuff. But they are hard.
