I cannot emphasize enough how true & real this is.

In almost anywhere on the political spectrum you ID with or major issue, there’s probably a bot/troll operation to encourage your rage and vitriol.

And how/where that rage gets directed, esp understandable rage, is what they are out to influence.

When a chatbot gets something wrong, it’s not because it made an error. It’s because on that roll of the dice, it happened to string together a group of words that, when read by a human, represents something false. But it was working entirely as designed. It was supposed to make a sentence & it did.

Chatbots — LLMs — do not know facts and are not designed to be able to accurately answer factual questions. They are designed to find and mimic patterns of words, probabilistically. When they’re “right” it’s because correct things are often written down, so those patterns are frequent. That’s all.

Every time I buy any new iOS device, every *other* iOS device I own resurrects from the fuckin dead its obnoxious auto-replacement of “omw” (tranquil, savvy-90s-texter-coded) with “On my way!” (frenzied, uninvited-stressful-mother-is-coming-anyway-coded)

Not an original point but worth saying again - there is not a single element in this picture that identifies any of these folks as law enforcement agents. No badges, no uniforms, no vests. Out of context it just looks like a bunch of random guys are kidnapping a mayoral candidate.

When people talk about advances in technology unlocking a new frontier of human prosperity, I'm always skeptical. Efficiencies accumulate wealth to the wealthy. Only a change in values — a change in the distribution of prosperity — will improve the lives of non-wealthy people.
