In Nazi Germany homelessness was criminalized. Homeless were called vagrants and tramps. Social services were limited or discontinued. In 1933 large scale round ups began targeting homeless people in Germany. In 1938 a "cleaning operation" sent 11k homeless people to labor camps. Most of them never made it back out. If it sounds familiar, it is.

The Flicker is a beautiful bird which, up close, almost looks like it was just thrown together, head fairly plain with a bright red slash, wings with a sort of checkerboard pattern and underside with heart shaped spots. All of this hides a very yellow underside mostly seen while flying.

Wings in a "V" formation, beak breaking the wind, neck recoiled, legs stretched out with toes pointed, the bittern takes to the marsh sky, flying low over the bulrushes, looking for its next place to hunt.

Got lucky on this one. Heard it "gulping" in the marsh but couldn't find it. Gave up, headed home, then all of a sudden it flew over the trail in front of me.
