I see them as related. Neoliberalism was faith that the free market would save us, which led directly to free trade. Also, that government spending should be minimal (in the US context only social spending), which created the lack of investment in real housing policy on the state and federal level.

I definitely agree with the latter, but I think the benefits of neoliberalism were illusonary. I think we all "benefited" from cheaper foreign goods, which provided short-term material gains while people lost long-term economic strength. A $500 tv can't replace homeownership for economic stability

I think anger about inflation is just an easy to understand metric for people who couldn't articulate that the neo-liberal economic model we've been forced into is actually leaving us poorer, isolated and more anxious. When told that poverty is a personal failing, inflation was something external.
