THANK YOU @mayor_bowser for meeting with our Parent Leaders yesterday! We had a great discussion on how we can continue to expand academic supports for all DC kids:

She advocated for public school choice as an extension of civil rights, enabling families to find the best fit for their child, and pushed for expanding quality school options & equitable funding for charters so all students, especially those furthest from opportunity, can get an excellent education

Dr. Edelin was an icon of the civil rights movement, and was instrumental in the formation and growth of the charter school movement here in DC.

Continuing our Black History Month series highlighting Black leaders who paved the way for DC's education system as we know it today, we're honoring Dr. Ramona Edelin!

We are grateful to Dr. Cooper and all the other education leaders who fought for all our kids to receive an excellent education!

Today, Dr. Cooper's legacy lives on in the Black educators of DC who continue to pursue academic excellence for our babies. In DCPS, roughly 50% of teachers and 74% of school leaders are Black, and our public school students in both sectors are leading the nation in academic growth.

She served as a teacher and principal of M Street High School in DC - now Dunbar High School - and advocated tirelessly for her students to access higher education and defy expectations of what Black students could accomplish.

Anna Julia Cooper was born into slavery, and following Emancipation she fought against racism and sexism to pursue her education, becoming the fourth Black woman in the US to earn a doctorate degree.

Over the course of the week, PAVE Parent Leaders hosted 12 meetings with our policymakers & elected officials to discuss their #ParentPriorities and policy solutions. Even when the snow had us pivoting to Zoom, the conversations were 🔥 - and we're just getting started as we move into budget season!

All the snow and ice last week couldn't stop the #PurpleWave at our 11th annual DC Parent Voice and Choice Week! 💜🎤❄️
