A lot of people on this site are very bad at boundaries and have not quite achieved sufficient theory of mind to recognize that other people are not just content dispensers and rage sinks, and it is very fucking tedious

I feel the need to clarify: I have no reason to believe Musk or any of the rich boy set are within 20 years of having a space colony; it's just such an obviously bad idea I don't know why they think working on them would be aspirational except for a few who would do anything to be in space 1/

You are absolutely right. Water is better than air, air is better than vacuum. You can't air cool data centres on earth. Space, na. (And there are practical issues about how big your radiator fins can be. given you don't want them radiating heat onto each other...)

Its 100% getting funding/hype

Example: one of the very worst problems in space is disposing of heat. He wants to put data centres in space - aka gigantic electric fires, which need water-cooling on earth. In space, all you can do is radiate it away. (ISS looks like that to keep it cool).

Simple question. A man designs a tunnel for traffic without emergency fire exitx on foot.

This person wants to design a space city.

Should he be allowed sharp scissors?

I'm writing books set in late Victorian London. Oh boy. And they blamed the immigrants the poor and the godless - while the nobs went to the slums to pick up young girls.

Small Prophets | Official Trailer - BBC
YouTube video by BBC Trailers Small Prophets | Official Trailer - BBC

It is rare for something shot in Manchester to feel absolutely Hooklandian, but Small Prophets is a rare thing - an esoteric TV comedy that grows the heart. Mackenzie Crook is a genius. Small Prophets is television treasure.

Londoners are sick of viral videos telling lies about their city Plus: Victoria Park battle over All Points East, the Hackney school war that wasn't, the AI-generated parking appeal mess, and wild swimming in the River Thames.

London’s got a global viral video malaise www.londoncentric.media/p/london-cri...

I have to say the people behind the court delays (the Tories) have a nerve complaining now the government is addressing it. (albeit, in one proposal, by the reduction in jury trials which is relatively ineffective and constitutionally noxious.)

It does seem to me ironic that those who complain most about various cities being 'no-go' have been those who have done the most to make/allow them to become that way. They certainly neglect the 'tough on the causes of crime' element. That is until they have discovered their 'magic' solution.

As long as I remember journalists write London is finished, we're moving to the county stories, and five years later, they're back living in London again.

The government has some good ideas to speed up courts and one disasterous one. There's a general unease about eg phone snatching, bike theft and burglary where police not prioritising. So I am not saying it's heaven.

I'm saying there's a reason millions of people bring up their kids here. 2/3

London a big modern city with all sorts of problems. Not a hell hole.

Its murder rate keeps dropping, way lower than the US; it's knife crime is lower than the US. 14 years of Tory cost cutting means serious crimes like rape are too slow to get to courts, nationally and that's appalling. 1/2

The BBC is reporting relief amongst leaders because Rubio has said US still wants to be ally of Europe. That isn’t what I heard. What I heard was Rubio saying the US wants Europe to be America’s vassal. The words & the meanings were not the same.

No idea of species - I was there studying the capuchin monkeys so I’m only sure it’s not a monkey

There's a massive issue for the young - there's also a massive issue with drives to make people work to seventy and noone keen to hire 50 year olds. Also, generally UK companies in some sectors poor on training.

The complaints were from two MPs and six others none of whom were any type of scientist or doctor. See also, hundreds of public institutions who have had a total of six complaints about loos.

Numerous accusations from critical media outlets claimed the clinic was a β€œtransing factory” that ignored β€œholistic” approaches to care and was recklessly prescribing puberty suppressant hormones, known as puberty blockers, to children.

One article from The Times, published in 2022, claimed that at least 1,000 families were planning mass legal action against the Tavistock gender clinic for rushing youngsters into taking puberty blockers.

However, a freedom of information (FOI) request to the Tavistock and Portman NHS Foundation Trust, shared by Yorkshire Bylines, revealed that, between 2012 and 2022, only eight complaints over healthcare provisions had been lodged.

This entire 'debate' is so maddening. We have been promised that a groundswell of rushed, dissatisfied detransitioners was about to emerge for nearly a decade.

Not only have they never materialized, but academic research continues to show small numbers, long assessments and miniscule regret rates.

This is a lovely story I'm sharing around. Trouble is we don't know if every Parmesan maker uses at least one Sikh, in which case all Parmesan, or if all Sikhs work for the small producers so perhaps even a majority of the cheese... etc etc

Have a good weekend
