Awards are just one piece of a big puzzle. Some books win awards. Some books get no stickers but STICK in our hearts forever. This year, all of those books, written so kids might better understand their place in this dark and scary world, feel more important than ever. #ALAYMA #TLSkyChat #KidLit

Today the DOE announced plans to dismiss 11 outstanding complaints against book bans, and to eliminate the position of Book Ban Coordinator at the Office of Civil Rights (OCR). This distortion of the intended work of the OCR--the protection of civil rights and students' freedoms in our nation's schools--is negligent, grossly un-American, and in direct conflict with freedom of speech, a bedrock right enshrined in the Constitution.

Authors Against Book Bans unequivocally stands against all such attempts at censorship and discrimination. We stand with families, students and educators across the country who exercise free speech every time they open a book, and with the 71% of Americans who are opposed to book bans. Book bans do not protect children; history teaches us that they are a terrifying step toward tyranny.

President Trump's DOE has made themselves clear: they will support book banners in their efforts to strip our institutions of learning of the books that define them.

So let us be perfectly clear: we're going to do whatever we can to try and stop them.

Egg prices are soaring again. Here’s why and what to expect Bird flu has killed millions of hens in recent weeks, shrinking the supply of eggs and hiking up prices at grocery stores.

The price of eggs in the US is spiking, mostly due to #H5N1 bird flu. Solving the problem requires urgent, important communications from the CDC & FDA* and rapid development of research by the NIH**

I don’t want my class to prepare students for ‘the real world.’

I want my class to help students dream of a better world.

A colorful ink and watercolor drawing featuring various eye-like shapes and patterns. The artwork has a whimsical, surreal quality with a mix of organic and geometric elements. The eyes are depicted in different styles, ranging from realistic to cartoonish. At the top, we see part of a DIY watercolor travel paint set. Art by Debbie Ridpath Ohi.

GET YOUR EYES CHECKED REGULARLY. Yrs ago, my family eye doctor saw something odd in regular checkup (no symptoms), sent me to specialist. Specialist said I had a "subclinical detached retina", had to operate ASAP.

He said that without operation, I would have gone blind in that eye within a year.

I just found out that Unboxing Libby received a starred review from Booklist! They called it a "riveting SF dramedy" and said "any fan of friendship stories will adore this tale of a preteen robot finding her true self." I read the trade reviews for work, so it's super exciting to be in one! #kidlit

I talk to a lot of aspiring picture book writers who have spent YEARS working on their first book. And revision is great! It's essential!

But you know what's really the key to picture book success? Write something new. Then do that again. (thread)
