I really like these planters that we saw in Avignon: simple + cheap materials, quick to install, allows for stormwater flow, slows traffic, and adds greenery to the streetscape. Would be great to have a bunch of these to cool and calm sun-baked 9th St in Durham.

Yes right on. That area around 15-501 is a sprawly mess but a BRT connection to downtown and redevelopment would be awesome. I gotta believe not (too) much NIMBY resistance to building out there either. Would make the proposed Coca Cola redevelopment even better.

Wish I could say I was happier with this but I think this corridor presents a lot of issues. First, doing all these different one-directional pairs and loops will dramatically expand the needed right of way and utility relocations - the biggest costs in the project. 🧵

The built-in consumerism even with used is rough, though. I don’t have a good solution for that except trying to put it off as long as possible and building in a bit of inconvenience and discomfort.

Facebook marketplace is a great source here. Nearly-new used kids bikes are widely available. Those Woom kids cargo bikes look pretty slick though.

This is a great demonstration. Is the effect due to the greater R-value of the wood fiber or is there some other property that accounts for this? I was surprised that wood performed this well even at the same relatively small layer thickness.

40,000+ are killed by car crashes every year in the U.S. 5,000,000+ more are injured. Human bodies mangled & broken, families sundered, dreams shattered. All preventable. I think "violence" is an apt word.
