Brick flues are a common discovery in pre-1940's single family homes. Sometimes they are used to vent older natural gas water heaters or furnaces (newer units tend to vent out walls, not up). They are sort-of structural... Don't remove them without a close look at the framing.

Washington Square Arch... Yet another beautiful public space in #newyorkcity.

While we were there (about 20 min) maybe 3 or 4 other groups stopped to experience it, including one couple that was speaking an eastern European language. I'd love to see this memorial/story get more attention.

The memorial is a "ribbon" that wraps around the first few floors of the building (a designated National Landmark). Visitors look at the mirrored ribbon at waist level to read the names of everyone who died in the tragic fire reflected in light through the laser-cut steel ribbon above.

The Triangle Shirtwaist Factory tragedy sparked national outrage and fueled major reforms in fire safety codes, labor laws, and workplace protections. It also galvanized support for unions and the women’s rights movement, linking worker safety to broader struggles for equality.

The fire killed 146 workers, mostly young immigrant women, some of them leaping from upper story windows in an attempt to survive.

In 1911, a fire swept through the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory - but exit doors were lockd from the outside to prevent workers from leaving the factory floor early, taking unauthorized breaks, or potentially stealing materials.

It's certainly not on the "most popular things to visit in NYC" list, but the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory Memorial (did you even know this was a thing) is actually a pretty compelling installation.

Not sure I agree with this take. I don't see how a more circulation in the same area could yield double the unit count without creating substantially smaller units.

Unsolicited opinion: from a design perspective, apartment block codes seem to allow for much more creativity.

The group of people with no power would like to address climate resiliency. The group in power slashed the National Weather Service and emergency aid, cut research funding, and abandoned renewable energy.
