My lymphoedema set in about a year after cancer treatment ended. I was hoping to avoid it. It can be extremely dispiriting to have new long-term health conditions emerge. These happen to most of us at some point as we age, but my conditions are inextricably linked to the trauma of cancer.

As if cancer itself wasn’t bad enough, it also creates a barrier between you and your loved ones. They’ll struggle to understand. They want to help but they’ve got their own feelings to process. So they’ll inevitably be clumsy with the words they use.
