#WithoutNSF I wouldn’t be a scientist. I studied thanks to an NSF fellowship. NSF funded my PhD and postdoc, and funds the work of my students today. W/O NSF our team couldn’t do the ancient DNA studies that teach us about our ancestors and their legacies. #SaveNSF www.nievescolonlab.org

Inferència de la demografia passada i l'adaptació genètica a Espanya utilitzant la cohort del GCAT Note: This document contains the Catalan translation of the article “Inferring past demography and genetic adaptation in Spain using the GCAT cohort” by Garcia-Calleja et al. Scientific Reports (2025)...

Figure showing the LAD regions over MHC and the score for the selection scan statistic over the region

Figure showing the LAD regions over MHC and the score for the selection scan statistic over the region

We find an overlap of signatures of selection and genomic regions showing local ancestry deviation, which may indicate selection events facilitated by admixture. For example, the selection signals in the LCT locus and the MHC region both showed Steppe ancestry enrichment. 🏇

With the information of local ancestry, we inferred regions with an excess of any main ancestral components that shaped European populations: West Hunter Gatherers, Early European farmers, and Steppe ancestry. 👣

Manhattan plot showing the detected selection signals and the related traits

Using 704 whole genome sequences, we discovered novel candidates for positive selection putatively associated with immunity (UBL7, SMYD1, VAC14) and diet (FDFT1)🥩. Interestingly, SMYD1 is related to the presence of antigen AnWj, a receptor of Haemophilus influenzae.🦠

We aimed to detect specific signals of adaptation in the Spanish population and infer which role past admixtures, such as the Neolithic Revolution, play in this process.🧑‍🌾

A reduction in effective population size has not relaxed purifying selection in the human population of Eivissa (Balearic Islands) Scientific Reports - A reduction in effective population size has not relaxed purifying selection in the human population of Eivissa (Balearic Islands)

This just out! rdcu.be/d5ptO. We compared SNP arrays and exomes in Eivissans and Minorcans, found that drift was way more intense in the former than in the latter, although, fortunately, Eivissans did not accumulate more deleterious mutations (1/2)
