If you listen to the LA radio feed of the Dodgers game you can hear the organist playing in the background; pretty sure they just played the Twin Peaks theme, then transitioned into β€œlet’s - go - Dodgers”.

tiny shriveled peaches, absolutely gross-looking, no one wants them; once picked you are stuck with them

Make an observation about your pantry that also sounds like the title of a novel.

It wasn’t enough to delete the programs. Now they’re deleting our students.

8-bit picture of Abobo from Double Dragon. Hecka cut, little blue pants. Maybe a mustache. Head seems too big for his body. Skipped leg day.

Why aren’t they taking the fired federal workers who are sharing their heartbreaking storiesβ€”the ones that Musk says were being paid to do nothingβ€”and making them famous? The cancer researcher on the verge of a breakthrough? The park ranger in Yosemite who won’t be there to conduct rescues and save lives? The air traffic controller who can speak to the connection between understaffing and recent plane crashes? Is it even safe to fly in Trump’s America?

The Democrats should be amplifying these folksβ€”writing op-eds about them, refusing to go on camera without sharing their spotlight, pressuring their IG influencers to raise them upβ€”but instead, we learn their stories from Reddit. As Moira Donegan wrote in The Guardian, β€œWhy are the Democrats so spineless?”

I've noted some of the procedural things Democrats could be doing in Congress, but this point from @edgeofsports.bsky.social's great piece in the Nation deserves emphasis.

This is basic politics, and it's baffling that every Democrat isn't doing it every day.

There's a lot happening on the national level that is weird & dangerous, but this is something happening today, this week, in our state that is *weird & dangerous* and we will not easily recover from it.

If any of that sounds unpleasant to you, please call your state rep, call the governor's office, *do your own research* if you need to on Senate Bill 1 for the 136th General Assembly of the Ohio Legislature.

It will hollow out the university and college systems in Ohio state-wide, it will put people you know and care about out of work. It will crater the economy in this state, and educators and students alike will go somewhere else to work and to study.

Students are not for these changes, educators are not for them, university administrators are not for them. Who benefits from these changes?

It enforces an extreme right-wing form of thought and asks students to rat out teachers who don't follow the new rules.

It’s also anti-union, anti-labor, and anti-worker – it prohibits for faculty/professors from going on strike.

It is intellectually dishonest at its core: it purports to β€œstop indoctrination” in the university system. This is an insidious lie. It will ENFORCE indoctrination by making certain concepts illegal to discuss (race, gender, social justice, climate change).

It will change how students are accepted and what scholarshops exist; how instructors and professors are assessed; it ends tenure; it will limit what concepts are allowed to be discussed in classes and how they are discussed. It eliminates "DEI" but does not bother to define what "DEI" means.

Ohio: the state senate has passed Senate Bill 1. If the state house passes it (they want it) and the governor signs it (he says he probably will), this will fundamentally change how universities and colleges function state-wide. This is bad.

Dreamt I was hanging out with Stephen King and casually talking about writing longhand vs typing on a computer; just writerly types shooting the shit. The whole conversation I was thinking about how I could get an open invite for me & my preschooler to use his pool over the summer.

These are strange days and I’m pretty stressed out; one of the things keeping me afloat is building a playlist called β€œweird smooth jazz.” Chick Correa, Donald Byrd, lots of unknowns (to me). Main criteria: would this sound dope as background music in an episode of Rockford Files?

Was thinking fondly of Tim Walz today; could use some more of those summer/fall empathetic dad videos these days. About politics, but also about automotive care, about fair food, about Prince.

I read PIRANESI by Susanna Clarke and it’s very good! The narrator is often isolated, but tries to predict what other characters might do. The reader knows more than him about the β€œplot,” but he’s written with intelligence - he figures things out in a way that feels right and true to the character.
