I love doing sound effects, but I play from a iPad, so it’s a bit of a pain (I like to use syrinscape). One problem I found was that in a Halloween session, I inadvertently discovered a trigger sound for one of my players that really upset her. Fortunately I was able to remove it from the mix

I loved this miniseries so much. Apart from Tom being the funniest he’s ever been, and the whole team being brilliant, it was so well DMed!

Plus, it’s inspired me to run a 5E Spelljammer campaign set entirely in deep wild space with mystery, monsters and ALL the space horror movie references.

But my biggest backfire was pushing hard to do a *short* campaign of 6-8 sessions and finally taking a break from it out of sheer exhaustion after nearly 120 sessions.

The Rigamarole

Shrouded in unnecessary mystery, this agent of unwavering and unwarranted regulation ties their criminal prey up in unbreakable red tape before lecturing them on the appropriate forms they should have filled out instead of doing crime.

Have I said this before? Not sure. But I recommend using prompts - put ‘sight, smell, taste, feel, sound’ on the inside of your DM screen or on your monitor as a prompt for when describing anything of note. Always try to use two. As you get more comfortable, add more prompts.

It reminds me of when Rimmer was in the Samaritans for a morning and five people committed suicide. “It made the papers, you know. Lemming Sunday, they called it.”

I think if we define ‘childlike’ in this context as being less burdened by constricting social norms of what is considered “appropriate adult behaviour”, then yes, for sure. (The ‘gaming is for children’ crowd.) But I’ve played with adults who behaved like toddlers, and trust me, no one wants that.

I remember back in 2E I totally misjudged the difficulty of a Black Dragon and TPKed the party. So … sorta?

But as a player? No. I’m far too sensible 😉

The party had to very quickly try to hide some bodies. They decided to try stacking them neatly in a cart but had so little time I made them roll. They did it so well and neatly that they fooled the guards and birthed a new term: “corpse lasagne”.

I’m almost always the DM, so not a lot of PC deaths, unfortunately. Or is that, fortunately?

In a one shot, a character of mine did perish holding a gate open so the party could escape. Brave? Yes. Valiant? Yes. Glorious? No.

He was consumed by a radioactive ooze and just sort of … melted.

My most recent character is a middle aged mechanical engineer/astronaut who found himself in a fantasy world and is looking for a way home. But if he gave up and settled down, I think he’d name his tavern after a famous pub where ‘everyone knows your name’.

One of my PCs is in love with one of the NPCs, which is a little awkward because the NPC is the older brother of the BBEG, who is also another PC’s father.

But they did go on a first date, and it was absolutely lovely, if a little awkward for me and the player. It faded to black at the end, FWIW.
