My brother in Christ, this is a hotel that caters to business travelers. I’m coming back from a 7-11 run because I don’t want to get price gouged on coffee in the lobby. And I damn sure didn’t need the company or conversation in the elevator, no matter how well intentioned it might be.

I had emailed about the distance from my hotel to today’s meeting, & the reply said to get the free 16th Street mall bus because “it’s a bit far.” It took me about 15 minutes, because goddamn it, I’m a New Yorker & we walk.

I would, but my body thinks it’s midnight & I’m just going to have a quick nightcap at my hotel’s bar.

I’ve been in Denver for all of 1.5 hours & I’ve already got an altitude headache. This is some bullshit.

Imagine my shock & horror when, at a “restaurant” at LGA, my burger was served with SWEET pickles - not dill like the gods intended. To quote LTC (r) Frank Slade, “if I were the man I was 10 years ago, I’d take a flamethrower to this place!”

Not looking forward to a 7 day work trip & hotel beds that are too damn soft. And definitely not looking forward to the high temps at my destinations. Bright side: the kids will come over every day to look after Goodie, who’s probably still getting over my last trip.

Welp, former soldiers past 50 should NOT watch The Last Rifleman, lest they be moved to tears by the end credits. Not a great film, but anyone who enjoyed those uncomplicated & largely unspoken bonds between service members in their youth will feel a pretty fierce tug on their heartstrings.

Home after a busy Saturday & the end of my week. I paid the standard “don’t unalive me for leaving you home alone all day” tax to His Royal Highness, & he repaid me by dumpster diving in the kitchen sink. ISTG, his unending appetite is the reincarnation of mine, millennia ago, after Mountain Phase.

My assistant general manager (essentially my XO) asked what my radio handles had been, back in the day. I disappointed him by telling him I liked “White 4,” which to him sounded boring, but it meant I was the Platoon Daddy for 2nd.

Since this is a larger restaurant, my managers, hosts, chefs, & some bussers all use radios. I just realized I’m confusing my entire team with both military & EMS jargon.

One of my challenges is learning the name of everyone on a large (company size for you military folks) team, in a short amount of time. They all know me, I’m the GM, but I almost feel like I’m being disrespectful if I don’t respond with their name. Thank the gods for a schedule/roster app.

Young people, for the eleventy thousandth time, if you’re a large group of 7+ people, arrive with your entire party before the kitchen closes, or I won’t honor the reservation. And no, threatening me with a 1 star review won’t budge me. If you curse at me, that just makes saying no easier.

New place has me busier than a one legged man in an ass kicking contest, but I’m lucky, for the most part I’ve inherited a great management team. For the first time in a while, I can actually direct & delegate.
