In a few weeks, we'll be publishing the finding that [redacted] people die every year because of climate change, equivalent to a loss of $[redacted]T USD, every year.

Here's what it costs us to open that publication to you. We have no federal grants for that work, and can't apply for them.

About 1500 of the approx. 2300 people that will have lost their lives across 12 European cities last week would still live, if it wasn't for our burning of oil, coal and gas. If we care about the right to life, we need to stop burning fossil fuels. www.imperial.ac.uk/grantham/pub...

This appears to also end the US greenhouse gas sampling network, including at Mauna Loa, the oldest continuous carbon dioxide monitoring site on Earth.

Heatwaves are silent killers, increasing risks for vulnerable people and exacerbating existing conditions.

Rapid analysis by the Grantham Institute and @lshtm.bsky.social estimates that nearly 600 lives will be lost due to the current UK heatwave.

The heat above 32°C in southeast England tomorrow will be 100 times more likely due to fossil fuel-driven warming 🌡️📈

Our super rapid study was published this morning. It is just the second time we’ve studied an event in real-time, using forecast data. It's been hot work.

THIS. For so many people, 30+ degrees in the UK is not 'oh what a lovely day' weather. For every numpty on social media saying "climate change isn't that bad, we'll have proper summers at last" there are who knows how many other people suffering in silence...

Feels so much like a tinfoil conspiracy I find it hard to truly absorb but it's a fact:

Oil & gas companies knew about climate change since at least the '70s, lied & created fake doubt to stop action. And today people will die in a heatwave that wouldn't have been a heatwave without their products.

As somebody from Florida now living in Oxford,
32C *is* dangerously hot when virtually no houses and very few public buildings have aircon and almost all of them are masonry built and designed to retain heat, you cannot be comparing hot weather here to heat in a place EQUIPPED for it, come tf on

In all seriousness, heatwaves - especially when they occur relatively early in the season like this one - can be dangerous. Drink plenty of water, stay out of the sun, layer on the factor 50. And check in on your vulnerable relatives and friends, who might be really struggling in the heat!

Understanding six “key truths” about climate change predicts policy support, discussion, and political advocacy - Climatic Change Effective communication is critical in efforts to limit and manage the risks of climate change. One empirical approach to crafting effective communication is to start with communication objectives, that is, the attitudes and actions one seeks to influence, then identify the beliefs that are most strongly associated with those objectives, and end by developing and delivering messages to promote those beliefs. This planning process can be iterative over time as the relevant key beliefs evolve. Here, we use data from a US nationally-representative survey conducted in 2023 (n = 1,011) to assess the degree to which six key truths often used by communicators to predict important attitudes (support for government action on climate change) and behaviors (seeking and sharing information about climate change, and engaging in political advocacy to support climate action): (1) climate change is happening (‘It’s real’); (2) human activity is causing climate change (‘It’s us’); (3) there is a scientific consensus about human-caused climate change (‘Experts agree’); (4) climate change harms people (‘It’s bad’); (5) a majority of people are concerned about climate change and support climate action (‘Others care’); and (6) actions can be taken to limit the harm (‘There’s hope’). We found that all six key truths are highly predictive of at least one, and in some instances many, of the attitudinal and behavioral outcomes analyzed. These findings suggest that communicating the six key truths about climate change has the potential to help build public and political will for climate solutions.

NEW: We explored the role of understanding six “key truths” about climate change:
-It’s real
-It’s us
-Experts agree
-It’s bad
-Others care
-There’s hope.

Understanding these facts predicts pro-climate attitudes and support for climate policies - read on:

In mid-May, temperatures soared in Greenland and Iceland. Climate change made the record-breaking heat about 3°C hotter.

Our latest rapid study is a reminder that cold climate countries are also experiencing unprecedented heat and a warning that it is driving rapid ice loss ☀️🧊
