She/they. Makes things. Has opinions. Probably a socialist. Maybe an anarchist. Definitely anti-fascist.

Good things are possible and we don’t have to settle.

Perhaps one of the things the Republicans are underestimating is how annoying it is to hear blatant lies about the place you live from the president and the national media. (Hello from Portland πŸ‘‹)

No, because gerrymandering creates more "safe" districts by spreading out their voters over more districts, but a big swing with people switching sides means they end up losing even more seats. It's like a dam. It can hold the river back most times, but if the flood breaks the dam, you're *fucked*

It's definitely a certain crowd here, but there's less algorithmic fuckery and plenty of open eyed looks at media the people we disagree with put out. The right talks about the left on X, but filtered through the right-wing media. We talk about the right and their media, and ours.

Incredible that @decisiondeskhq.bsky.social already called it. Do y’all believe us now that Georgia is in play next year but only if we organize for it?

Now I'm pondering whether it would be possible to accelerate any food item to near light speed...

I remember reading something after 9/11 along the lines that the terrorists knew that the US was too big and powerful for them to really hurt and the best they could do was trick it into hurting itself and I wish I could remember who it was cause damn they were right.

I guess they're not technically *throwing* tear gas canisters and pepper balls, does that make it not count?

They're even wrong about the 1950s & 60s, and some of them were alive then!

They're also really wrong about the periods of history they're idolizing most of the time. It's very annoying.

Also kinda wish the abstract made it clear that it was an LLM being used and not some other kind of machine learning. Calling LLMs "AI" is part of why people think they can think.

This makes me want to scream. Yeah, let's outsource moral decisions to fancy autocomplete that will change its answer to whatever you want to hear based on how you phrase the question. We're so cooked.

There is a bunch of data from the UK recently that shows this is exactly how to *lose* elections. If you try to "moderate" by moving right on things like immigration, you alienate your own base and don't pick up votes because the people who want those things already have a party to vote for!

At the very least, Musk fundamentally doesn't understand how LLMs work, as evidenced by his behavior and statements around the mechahitler incident.

People are confusing two propositions:

1) we don’t know all the algorithms developed by the LLM so we don’t know exactly how it produces each answer.

2) we don’t know how LLMs work.

1) is true. 2) is not true. But it’s 2) that people appeal to when they speculate an LLM is β€œthinking”.

The way our society exists b/c of unpaid/low-paid labour (mostly by women) needs to be talked about more & compensated for. UBI is a simple solution for that. I've seen too many elderly women w/ barely anything bc they supported everyone else with free labour their whole lives.

Police departments paid out $2.3 billion in settlements in one year.

We're not overspending feeding people. We're overspending beating people.

I agree generally with your point that there are startup costs that make it hard but as someone who has been broke my whole adult life & had to set up a new kitchen after losing most of our stuff in a flood, $1000 off the bat is nuts. You don't need a fully equipped kitchen to make edible food.

If I have privilege here it's that my mom & aunties taught me to cook, so I knew, but if you have to buy a couple pots at goodwill and eat off dollar store plates and use 1 $6 knife for everything, it's rough, but not impossible. I don't think people *should* have to live like that but you *can*.

Schools went on lockdown, people stayed inside. It lasted the entire afternoon. A constant din of whistles, sirens, helicopters, people shouting. Or dead silence.

I see the NYT, New Yorker, commentariat frame it as "activists clashing with ICE."

No.

ICE/CBP/DHS are terrorizing US citizens.

Some context to the viral videos:

Around 9am Friday, ICE/CBP *encircled* several square miles of a safe suburb and *stormed* it using multiple units.

They were in cars, on foot in alleys & gangways, and in helicopters. They demanded papers, threatened residents, pointed guns, kidnapped people.
