I'm afraid my photo doesn't do it justice, but it was a meticulous drawing. Reproduced in a new book 'Mohua Gold' by Mike Johnston.

Nope, the Feilding ones had to apply before they left England to the Emigrant & Colonists Aid Corp. Whanganui got what was left over after everyone else had their pick.

Whanganui & the 'Woodlark' Passengers The Woodlark passengers who hadn't found employment in Wellington were taken by paddle-steamer to Whanganui. Wanganui Chronicle, 6 April 1874: The p.s. 'Manawatu' will leave Wellington for Wanganui to...

I've been investigating the 'Woodlark' passengers that went to Whanganui then got side-tracked looking at their employers. Some prosperous enough to have their photograph taken but also a couple of rogues - bigamy & bankruptcy. #OnePlaceWednesday More to come. app.weare.xyz/public/the-w...

I get the feeling he might have been a bit eccentric. He had a portrait of Oliver Cromwell and a (supposed) key to the Tower of London. Married the sister of my Montagu gg-grandmother.

How's this for a clause in the 1913 will of the Revd William Francis Dashwood Lang? #GenHour #genealogy

Protective custody for a valuable cargo of 'brood mares' for the new colony. Govt officials didn't want women that were a moral threat or an economic burden. Often the ship's doctor, matron and captain bent the rules to make it more bearable.

Yes, imagine being locked below decks in the stifling heat of the Equator or during a storm in the roaring forties! Sometimes stroppy women protested by making a racket, banging pots and pans at this treatment. #OnePlaceWednesday

New Plymouth history Bluesky: any hints on naming this young lady? In Josiah Flight's papers. I'm wondering if it might be a niece of Thomas Kelly, the MP / Legislative Council member.

I'm amazed at the connections I'm finding between passengers - marriages, chain migration, a couple of swaggers arrested together twenty years after arrival. Not the promised land of milk & honey for many though.

Fascinated by how the passengers lived their lives after arrival. For some it was quite a struggle with alcohol, crime and no fixed abode. Others just disappeared once they stepped off the ship, but there's chain migration too. #GenHour
